We sell remaindered books. When a new title is going to be released the publishers can only guess at how many of that title they are going to sell. A lot of the time they guess wrong and print too many.

They send out all the books to regular book stores and department stores and they sit on the shelf waiting to be purchased. Eventually the popularity of that title will wane and a few of those books will just be taking up valuable room. In the meantime, a new title is released and because it's newer it is generally assumed that it will be more popular in the short term. Because of this, the retailer would prefer to fill the shelf space that the first book currently occupies with the new title that they hope will sell better.

The bookseller packs up most copies of the first book and sends them back to the publishers who promptly credit the retailer. The publishers suddenly find themselves with a lot of books that none of the regular booksellers want to stock and so they are left with two options. They can either destroy the books (which is wasteful and polluting) or resell them at a discount price to a discount bookstore. In most cases the publishers will choose to resell them in an attempt to recoup some of the costs involved with printing the book. When this happens the books are classified as ‘remaindered’.

Remaindered books are often marked with a black pen along the base of the book to indicate their current status. They also exhibit a certain level of wear and tear caused by the extra travel and handling but are essentially brand new.
